This fictionalized portrait of the famed 18th-century Edo artist Utamaro tells the story of five women, courtesans and commoners, who inspired his work. In one symbolic, highly charged scene, Utamaro paints on the back of a beautiful courtesan, a sketch that is later tattooed into her skin.
